Elite exists on different Platforms and in the case of PC in different versions too.

Development on Elite Dangerous by Frontier Development has been discontinued on XBox and Playstation. This frozen version of Elite is now known as Legacy Elite and is also available for PC.

The actively maintained versions are Horizons and the Odyssey Expansion on PC only. Both Horizons and Odyssey are referred to as the Live version(s) of the game.

Horizons and Odyssey can share a Commander (progress you achieve in Horizons would also be present in Odyssey).

If you had a Commander before the Live/Legacy Split you now have two commanders that progress independently of each other.

In essence we have 5 different platforms/game modes that cannot instance players with each other.  You can find details about this in the table below.

Before you call jumps for a case on PC make sure you are in the gamemode the client specified or is assumed to be in. Then let our bot, MechaSqueak, know in a DM which gamemode you are in.

Sometimes, on PC, a client is not in the mode that they have declared during the case formation process.  It is not currently possible to distinguish if a client is in legacy, without having your own legacy commander to check.   It is also not possible to distinguish between horizons and odyssey prior to fr+ (which can be executed regardless of which version of live they are using).

There are some notable features that are available in live versions that are not available in legacy which may effect the choices a dispatch or rat makes during a rescue.  They include but are not limited to:  Super Cruise Overdrive (SCO) and Stuck Recovery (Sometimes referred to as Return to Orbit or RTO).

  1. The Reset to Orbit button, from the main menu, can be found in the following location:
Main Menu → Help and Info → Stuck Recovery

After some testing, it not only works on stranded on-foot or in-SRV CMDRs, but it also works on CMDRs in an EZ, or in Orbital height and falling under the influence of a planet's gravity. This makes falling CRs and TFPs obsolete on live.

This option cannot be accessed from the pause menu.

  2. Does it work on commanders too close to stars (the other reason for CR TFPs?)

  3. that's still an EZ, so yes, it does. It is also how I tested
